Many people drink large quantities of water when breaking the fast in Ramadan after a long day of fasting, especially on hot days, and this matter has health consequences because filling the stomach with liquids causes shortness of breath, so it is possible to drink a glass of water every two hours after breakfast, and if it is Consuming enough water helps your body regulate temperature, prevent constipation, and flush out toxic waste. However, drinking too much water can lead to water poisoning and serious health consequences.
Today, we will review some of the dangers of excessive drinking water at breakfast after a long day of fasting:
1- Digestive problems:
When a person consumes an excessive amount of water suddenly after a long period of fasting, the stomach becomes filled with liquids, and this matter becomes more distressing for the soul than filling it with food.
2- Hyponatremia:
Salts and minerals help maintain the balance of fluids inside and outside the cells of the body. Excess water dilutes sodium in the blood, which leads to the flow of fluids into the cells, which causes them to swell.
Hyponatremia is a health condition in which sodium levels fall below 135 mmol per liter of serum and with low sodium levels, you will begin to feel nausea, confusion, fatigue or headache.
3- Diarrhea:
Excessive water leads to hypokalemia or an imbalance of potassium ions inside and outside the cells, which in turn causes diarrhea and sweating for long periods.
4- Fluid accumulation in the brain:
Excessive water consumption leads to hyponatremia of brain cells, to increase the pressure inside the skull, which leads to an accumulation of fluid in the brain and is called cerebral edema, which affects the brain stem and causes a defect in the functions of the central nervous system. Enlargement of the brain can lead to impaired speech, confusion, unsteady gait, psychosis, and even death.
5- Stress on the heart:
Consumption of excessive water leads to increased blood volume to unnecessary pressure on the blood vessels and heart. This can lead to heart failure in people undergoing dialysis.
6- Acute kidney injury:
Consuming lots of water reduces the plasma levels of arginine and vasopressin which helps maintain kidney function. Therefore, the kidneys need to make additional efforts to maintain balance, which leads in the future to acute kidney injury.
