Dear Driver: Here are 5 essential tips to prepare your car for the upcoming winter
During the winter, the car and its driver suffer from some problems that disturb the driving, such as rainwater accumulating on the roof of the car and condensing on the windows, freezing of door locks, and freezing of coolant, which may cause serious damage to the engine.
To avoid these problems and enjoy driving, the German Automobile Club "ADAC", the German Quality Control Authority "Tüv Süd" and the Technical Inspection Association "GTÜ" provide some tips on how to prepare the car for driving in cold weather.
1- Thomas Kazman, from the Technical Inspection Association, said that performing maintenance work at regular times specified by the car manufacturer often spares the driver major problems in the winter. Also, modern models are designed to drive in the desert and cold areas.
2- One of the important tasks before entering the winter after the basic cleaning process is to check the windshield wipers, to make sure that they are doing their job well so that they pull the water lines and cleaning fluid from above the glass and whether the wiper blades need to be replaced. It is also necessary to replace the broken lights.
3- Before winter, it is necessary to treat the rubber adjustment and sealing elements in the doors with rubber care materials and lubricate them with Vaseline and put defroster on the door locks.
It is also useful to take some accessories, such as gloves and a windshield cover, as well as a heating cover in the luggage compartment for use in emergencies.
4- For old cars, German experts advise to go to car maintenance centers; as the German Automobile Club holds the battery responsible for most car malfunctions that occur in the winter, so it must be checked in specialized centers, especially if it is more than four years old.
5- The advantages of winter tires are not limited to driving in snow and ice, but their advantages extend to include their suitability for driving in low-temperature climates due to the adhesion strength they provide over summer tires depending on their design, but they lose their advantage in the winter when the tread wears out and becomes old.
The German Automobile Club stresses that the tread depth of winter tires should not be less than four millimeters. Equally important is the need to add antifreeze to the coolant, as ice in the cooling system can damage the engine.
